Never Let Me Go Comparision

All of the images shown are covers for the book Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. The purpose of all the images seems to be a scene from the book or a representation of a scene from the point of view from the artist. Such as one cover shows a blurry girl showing Kathy's blurry thoughts or a picture of organs which may be the same organs the children have to "donate". Differences is that all covers have different types of art work. One has a photograph, another drawing, and a painting. This may signify how the artist felt about the scene he was painting/photographing and it also effects the message received by the audience.

These two images make me think of children and youth. The first one seems like something a child may draw while the second one does look like a child that is moving. Looking at the first image, I would think the story is about someone fighting a disease such as cancer or a heart attack because of the title Never Let Me Go. Looking at the second image, I would think the story is about a little girl fighting through an illness to be a child still or maybe a conflict that made her lose herself such as being separated from her mother/father. Now that I've read the book, the body shown in the first picture can show the organs that are donated when a child comes of age. The second picture can represent how Kathy's childhood was blurry because she did not seem to be sure on how things happened and it's only her representation of things. This may also show how the future is uncertain as well. Any of the children are portrayed in the first one but I believe Kathy is portrayed in the second one. People struggling with an internal issue may make these covers because there are many interpretations the pictures can have when looking at both the image and the title. These same people may be the audience looking for hope or a way to end their pain.

  1. I made a lot of the same points in my blog post as you did in yours! I also thought when looking at the cover with barbed-wire that if I saw it for the first time I would think it was about a child fighting a terminal illness such as cancer. I personally didn't really understand the second cover you chose to analyze, but after reading your blog post I see how it could represent childhood. However, I think that it may represent the blurriness of their future as opposed to the blurriness of their childhood. Kathy seems to remember her childhood pretty well, but when they were children, so much was hidden from them and they were kept in the dark about so many things that they didn't really know what their future was holding for them, hence the 'blurriness'. Overall, good post!

  2. I also chose to analyze the first cover you did but not the second, so you really opened my eyes! I thought it was interesting how you referred to how Kathy's childhood as blurry. Though she is able to recall many events with such clarity, we can see in her descriptions of Ruth how bias may tint her memory. I also agree with you about the first cover, and how a possible interpretation could be a child who has a terminal illness. The title reminds me a bit of the book/movie "If I Stay", and how it is ambiguous about the concept of depth. Overall, you did a great job!
